Event Description:
Southwestern Oklahoma State Universitys 25th annual Westview Writers Festival 2018 will be on Tuesday, April 24 and Wednesday, April 25, on the Weatherford campus. Activities both evenings will be held in the SWOSU Memorial Student Center Ballroom. Admission to the workshops is $5.00. Tickets available via Language & Literature faculty or by contacting Admission to the readings is free, and the public is welcome to attend. The event celebrates the ongoing publication of Westview, SWOSUs literary journal, and supports emerging writers and publishers. Offering workshops and readings by feature authors as well as students, faculty, and community members, the festival provides both education and entertainment while fostering the art of creative writing. Schedule of Events Tuesday, April 24 5-6 p.m. Creative Non-fiction Workshop with Marshall Todd Fuller Marshall Todd Fuller, author of 60 Feet Six Inches and Other Distances from Home: the (Baseball) Life of Mose Yellow Horse and To the Disappearance, co-director of Mark Allen Everett Poetry Series, and Adjunct Lecturer for Oklahoma City Universitys MFA program, will offer attendees the opportunity to learn about and develop non-fiction writing strategies and techniques. 6-7 p.m. Reading: Poetic Justice Representatives from Poetic Justice, a non-profit organization working with incarcerated women to teach poetic literacy as a means to express emotion and promote positive, meaningful change, will read from a collection of poems authored by women in Oklahoma prisons and jails. They will also show a brief documentary about their program. A question and answer period will follow. 7-8 p.m. Feature Reading: Marshall Todd Fuller Marshall Todd Fuller, whose work has most recently appeared in Matador Review, Malpais Review, and Dragon Poet Review, will return with a reading from his non-fiction collection. A question and answer period with the author will follow. Wednesday, April 25 5-6 p.m. Poetry Workshop with former Poet Laureate Benjamin Myers 2015-2016 Poet Laureate and winner of the Oklahoma Book Award, Benjamin Myers, will share his insights into the world of writing poetry. Attendees will also have the opportunity to participate in a Q & A session with the author. 6-7 p.m. Reading: Winners of Westview Poetry Contest Westview Poetry Contest winners will be honored; contestants from the community, faculty, and students will read their award-winning poetry. 7-8 p.m. Feature Reading: Benjamin Myers Benjamin Myers, author of two books of poetry: Lapse Americana and Elegy for Trains, will read a sampling of his recently published poetry. Copies of Westview and subscriptions to the journal will also be available for purchase during this event.
